HUD Stats VPIP and PFR
When using Poker Tracking Software, by far the two most important HUD stats are VPIP and PFR.
Poker Tracking Software is an application that most if not every serious online poker player utilizes to track their own and their opponent’s statistics. The HUD is the vital feature of these applications. HUD stands for Heads Up Display, which is a feature that runs during the games attaching to the poker client and displays statistics next to each player updating in real time.
When using a HUD, you must master these two stats first. Understanding and leveraging VPIP and PFR are vital to your poker success.
VPIP stands for Voluntarily Put Money in the Pot. The VPIP stat is the percentage of starting hands a player is playing. A player with a high VPIP like 40 plays many hands, while a player with a low VPIP like 10, is only playing with the best hands. This percentage determines how many times a player put money into the pot preflop by limping, raising, or calling. The Blinds are not included in this stat because this bet is not voluntary as the player is forced to put money into the pot. VPIP is important because it shows how many hands someone is playing indicating if they are a tight or loose player.
PFR stands for Preflop Raise. PFR is a percentage of how often the player makes any raise (2Bet, 3Bet, and beyond) preflop. This stat can let you know if they are passive or aggressive. This stat should be used in conjunction with the VPIP and can indicate how aggressive a player is. If a player has a VPIP vs PFR of 20/18, that means this player raises almost every time when entering a pot, whereas if the player has a ratio of 30/4 then that player is almost always just calling or limping. And if a player is aggressive preflop, then that player will almost certainly be aggressive post-flop.
